Renovation of WW1 German ‘Picklehauber’ Helmet

This First World War German helmet was brought to me in a sorry state. It was a treasured item that had been tucked away for many years. The spike was detached from the main body. The inner leather lining was rotted. The overall condition of the cuir bouilli, (or boiled leather) helmet was in need of some tlc, the metal peak needed reattaching.

The liner was remade by copying some fragments of the original. The helmet shell was refurbished, the ornamental front plate removed and cleaned, new cockades were sourced, and a new chinstrap made. A piece of history proudly back on duty.

100 year old Gun Case Refurbished & Interior relined

This shotgun case had seen some days! The outer leather was stained and damaged, the handle missing, the retaining straps missing, and the interior compartments completely wrecked!

New wooden compartment walls were made. New red wool liner sourced and fitted. Handle sourced and fitted. Retaining straps made from scratch, with brass buckles and sleepers. The case leather cleaned, repaired and a cosmetic colour added. One very happy client.

Leather Sword Scabbard Repair and New Sword Acorn

A Wilkinson sword with a broken scabbard. This was a leather wrapped wooden scabbard that was in half, the sword ‘frog’ or hanger needed attention and the leather ‘acorn’ (a strap with an adornment that wraps around your wrist) was missing. Also a pair of spurs that needed some work on the straps.

The scabbard was joined together and an ‘antiqued’ leather piece covered the join. The frog cleaned, conditioned and some colour added to enhance. A new acorn sourced. The sword polished. A treasured family heirloom, returned to a very pleased customer.

Leather Rocking Horse Saddle & Tack Remade

After a very interesting phone enquiry, a box of various damaged straps and pieces of leather arrived at the Workshop.

Included in the box was a very itemised instruction brief for the remake and construction of a leather rocking horses saddle and tack. This was for a smaller size rocking horse but still very detailed. The straps and saddle cut from veg tanned leather and dyed according to the original, some pattern motifs was also added to the seat.
