How do I know if my leather upholstery is dirty?

The years pass quickly. Your furnishings take their punishment daily, a build up over time of everyday use, and then you notice how grubby things are.

1Oils and Grease — Body oils can easily attach and transfer to the head cushions and armrests of your leather furniture, and can cause serious damage to the protective finishes found on leather. Especially if you have pets that use the seating areas as well.
Atmospheric Soils — consider the dust that builds up on a coffee table or desk over a week’s time. This same dust is being deposited on your leather. In addition to this dust you add airborne cooking oils and atmospheric pollution that is present, to some degree, in every home.
Common Soils — these soils include the common dirt tracked in from outside and garden by adults, children and pets.
Dyes and Inks — the inks from newsprint in newspapers and from a leaky pen can readily be deposited on leather.  Clothes such as denims can transfer dye onto leather leaving a coloured ‘bloom’.

Leather seat during restorationLeather comes in many finishes, Pigmented, Aniline, Nubuck, plus many other Trade Names of finish. Cleaning of each finish varies greatly and damage will occur if wrongly applied. Generally speaking Pigment Coated (Pigmented) leather does not mark easily and is not absorbent.

There are two tests that you can do yourself to see if you have Pigment Coated leather

Scratch Test

3Does your leather mark easily when you run your finger nail over the surface?

Moisture Test

moisture_testDoes a drop of water soak into the leather quickly and leave a darker mark rather than remaining on the surface.

If the answer to both of these is no then you have a Pigment Coated (Pigmented) leather.

The cleaning procedure for this type of leather is a 3 to 4 point process.

Pre Clean, Deep Clean, Ultra Deep Clean, Leather Protect.

All done by hand, ensuring a methodical, accurate process.

Aniline, Nubuck, Wax Pull up, Bi Cast, Micro-Pigment, are other types of finish which need identification and inspection to determine cleaning requirements and process.

Over time, accidents happen, leather is susceptible to scuffs, scratches, cuts, tears, fading and other damage. As the owner of leather furniture you are bound to experience some of these common problems. Do not despair!

Devon Leather Care can match colour to original and bring back to life those problems which you thought were near irreparable! Many repairs can be carried out on site, but due to drying times of some procedures it may be necessary to take back items to the workshop for completion.

Leather Repair & Restoration

How it works

The leather is prepared for colouring, by thorough cleaning and removing all dirt from surface and creases, any greasy areas are de-greased which can take several days treatment if heavily soiled. Now at this stage any repairs to the leather are made. Worn, cracked and weak leather would now be either replaced or strengthened, attention to any cuts, rips, tears, burns or holes. Alcohol spirit is applied to remove all traces of minute dust etc. Colour is then applied. The first coat is applied by hand working it into all natural creases and hard to reach areas. A second coat is then applied using a spray gun for a natural and even cosmetic look.
Once dry a finish is applied which seals the pigment, Matt, Satin, or Hi Gloss or a balance according to type.

Rounded off with an application of Leather Protection to finalise the job!
